Terraria: Every Kind Of Crate & Where To Find Them (2024)

There are 13 different kinds of Crates that can be found in Terraria, all in different manners. Each spawns in a different biome, has different catch rates to be caught while fishing, and even appears in different chests, making which kind of Crates one finds heavily dependant on the player's location.

Crates always contain random loot, such as potions, pieces of ore, and much more, and can be found fairly passively while exploring...if one knows where to look. Always keep one's eyes peeled for Crates in Terraria, as they are essentially the world's way of giving the player a little gift--a far cry from its often cruel nature.

General Information About Crates

There are 13 different kinds of Crates, however, there are Hard Mode versions for all of them that possess a different name and visual appearance despite containing pretty much the same loot. To get a better sense of where to find each Crate, be sure to take note of the spawning criteria for every breed of this container.

Wooden Crate

Called Pearlwood Crates in Hard Mode, Wooden Crates are the most commonly found of this container type. They can be found in any biome, are commonly caught while fishing, and can be found in both Surface Chests and Underground Chests.

Iron Crate

Know as Mythril Crates in Hard Mode, Iron Crates are also very easy to find, as they can spawn in any biome, though are uncommonly caught while fishing and cannot be found in any chests whatsoever.

Golden Crates

These shining yellow containers are Titanium Crates in Hard Mode and, despite spawning in any biome, are very rare to find while fishing. Like Iron or Mythril Crates, Golden and Titanium ones do not appear as loot in any kind of chest.

Jungle Crate

Boxes that become Bramble Crates in Hard Mode, Jungle Crates, as one may be able to guess, are only found in Jungle biomes. They are a rare find while fishing but can be found within Ivy Chests, if the player is a bit lucky.

Sky Crate

In Hard Mode, Sky Crates are called Azure Crates and are aptly found only in Sky biomes. While fishing, players will only find this kind of Crate rarely, though, it's possible to acquire them from Skyware Chests.

Corrupt Crate

Sinister in appearance due to the eye upon it, Corrupt Crates and their Hard Mode counterparts, Defiled Crates, are a bit spooky to be around. These are only found in Corruption biomes as well as in Shadow Orbs, though are also possible to find rarely while fishing.

Crimson Crate

Hematic Crates are what Crimson Crates are called in Hard Mode, and they're both only found in Crimson biomes, though are also a rare find while fishing. Furthermore, players can open up Crimson Hearts to possibly find more such Crates.

Hallowed Crate

Almost relaxing to be around, Hallowed Crates as well as their Hard Mode variant Divine Crates, can only be sought out in Hallow biomes. Players can find them rarely while fishing but they do not appear in any kind of chest.

Dungeon Crate

These, and their Hard Mode cousins the Stockade Crates, appropriately only spawn in Dungeon biomes. Those who do some fishing can find them on rare occasions as well as possibly in Locked Gold Chests.

Frozen Crate

Known as Boreal Crates in Hard Mode, Frozen Crates can only be found in Snow biomes and Ice biomes, being the only breed of Crate to appear in more than a single biome but not all of them. However, like most other Crates, they can be found rarely while fishing and are attainable in Frozen Chests.

Oasis Crate

Players in Hard Mode will find these as Mirage Crates, and, as many can guess, are only found in Desert biomes. There isn't much water in which to fish in a Desert biome, however, if players can find an Oasis sub-biome, they can do some fishing for a rare chance to pull up one of these Crates. Alternatively, they can also be found in Sandstone Chests.

Obsidian Crate

Ominous to behold, Obsidian and Hellstone Crates (the Hard Mode variant) can be found in any biome, however, the catch is that they can only be found via fishing in lava. As such, players will need a rod that can take the heat, though, once they have such a tool, they'll have a common chance to reel in such Crates. It is also worth mentioning that this kind of Crate can be found in Shadow Chests.

Ocean Crate

Arguably the most natural kind of Crate to find similar to real life, Ocean Crates as well as their Hard Mode version, Seaside Crates, are located only in Ocean biomes. They are another kind of Crate that is a rare find while fishing and can spawn in Water Chests.

Terraria is available on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation Vita, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, macOS, Linux, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia.
