Spaetzle Makers

Making the popular homemade German noodles is vastly easier with a purpose-made Spaetzle press. Presses come in basically three types: a stainless lid that fits over the pot, with holes through which you push or scrape the dough; a gizmo resembling a mandolin with a box container on top for the dough; and a press that you squeeze like a garlic press to push the dough through holes into the pot. We like a traditional spaetzle press such as this one from Westmark. View Spaetzle makers on Amazon>

Raclette Grill

A Raclette party is near effortless entertaining, a casual-chic communal cooking experience. As host, basically all you have to do is find the right cheese, chop up some veggies, and maybe roast some small potatoes. Sure, you could pull off the meal with a broiler or grill. But how much cooler (and easier) to use a purpose-built raclette grill. You can find them sized for two to eight people. This eight-person electric version features both non-stick and stone grills, and eight raclette pans for melting the cheese.

Ebelskiver Pan

It’s hard to imagine making the heavenly stuffed pancake puffs called Ebelskiver (Förtchen/Poffertjes) without the special pan. The Ebelskiver pan enables the spherical result — basically you partially fill the concave wells with batter, add your sweet or savory filling, and turn them with skewers to let the remaining uncooked batter form the other half of your pancake ball. These stuffed pancake balls are popular in northern Germany, Holland and Denmark, served plain just dusted with powdered sugar, or filled with spiced apples, jam, or Nutella.

Weck Jars with Lids

Weck Jars are extremely popular in Europe, and they have a devoted following here in North America for both canning and storing food. People love them for their beauty, but more importantly because the jars and lids are all glass, so no plastic comes in contact with your food. (Most canning jars in the US have a plastic coating inside the lids.) The Weck jars are all wide-mouthed, and have a rubber gasket with stainless steel clips used during processing. The tulip shapes are particularly popular. Watch out though — these jars may go at least temporarily out of stock during canning season.

Kaiser Measuring Cup

A great timesaver for those who cook from both North American and European recipes. Here’s a plastic version from Westmark, and a glass version made in Czechoslovakia.
