Ever hear of air plants? I sure hadn’t but my sweet and thoughtful husband, knowing how much I love plants, bought me the most amazing gift for Mother’s Day this year –Air Plant Terrarium. Having no idea what in the world anAir Plantwas I needed to learn how to take care of mine. After doing some research I learned just how amazing these plants are.
This teardrop shaped Air Plant Terrarium hangs from the ceiling or is small enough to display on a desk or window sill. Such a cute little gift idea! Inside you find an air plant, moss, dried thistle, crystals and sand for the base. I hang mine with fishing wire from a curtain rod in front of my window. It gets great light and I can see it everyday from my desk.

Air plants are great for anyone who thinks they can’t take care of plants or keep them alive – these low maintenance plants are so easy to take care of and require very little attention!
Air plants receive most of their nutrients from the air around them and only need a 15 minute soak in water every week. Since I live in a more humid environment mine are doing well with a short 5 minute soak every week.

The best part – no dirt – so no mess or fuss! So, since I fell in love with these little beauties I wanted to share a way for you to make your very own wall hanging which can display an air plant.
Crochet Air Plant Holder pattern details
These little crochet air plant hangers are so quick and easy to make with a small rectangle panel for the back hanging panel and a triangle panel for the pouch. I am using one of my favorite stitches – theMoss Stitchwhich creates a woven look perfect for this boho plant hanger.
We have a lot of trees on our property and I found a beautiful branch of birch littering our back yard that was perfect and my husband cut down to size – I absolutely love the rustic look it gives it. However, you could certainly use a craft dowel instead or even a natural bamboo stick.
The optional fringe detail at the bottom adds a nice boho touch as well!
I used scraps of Lion Brand’s Comfy Cotton Blend since you want to use yarn that is breathable and doesn’t hold moisture.

Supplies:
Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend Whipped Cream .6 oz / 34 yds (Color A)
Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend Mochaccino .2 oz / 12 yds (Color B)
Size I/10 (6.0 mm) crochet hook
1 – 6” long wood dowel or branch 1/2” wide
1 – Air Plant
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
Stitch Markers
Approximate finished size: 5” wide x 6” tall (not including dowel)
Gauge: 17 rows worked in pattern = 4”
Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
st = stitch
sk = skip
sp = space
Notes about pattern:
- Pouch is made separately and sewn to panel at end.
- Panel and pouch are crocheted in turning rows.
Panel
With Color A, ch 22
Row 1: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, sk 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch,* repeat between * * to end. Turn.
Row 2: ch 1, sc in 1st sc (base of ch 1), sc in ch 1 sp, *ch 1, sc in next ch 1 sp,* repeat between * * to last st, sc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: ch 1, 1 sc in first sc, *ch 1, 1 sc in next ch 1 sp,* repeat between * * to last 2 sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in last sc. Turn.
Rows 4 – 25: repeat rows 2 – 3.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Pouch
With Color B, ch 2
Row 1: (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in 2nd ch from hook. Turn.
Row 2: ch 1, (1 sc, ch 1) in same st, (1 sc, ch 1) in ch 1 sp, 1 sc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: ch 1, (1 sc, ch 1) in same st, (1 sc, ch 1) in each ch 1 sp to last st, 1 sc in last st. Turn.
Row 4 – 12: repeat row 3.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing pouch to panel.
Place pouch on panel approx 1” from both sides of panel and 1” from bottom of panel, use stitch markers to hold pouch in place. With long length of yarn from pouch, sew pouch to panel. See diagram below:
Fringe (optional)
Cut 10 pieces of Color A yarn approximately 4” in length. Use 2 pieces of yarn for each fringe – place approximately 1/2” apart across bottom of panel.
Attaching to Branch or Dowel
With a long length of Color A yarn approximately 60” long, double yarn and put on tapestry needle, approximately 1” from top right corner, run yarn through, (leave enough yarn to weave in & secure) around wood dowel twice and knot at top of dowel, leave approximately 9” of doubled yarn for hanging and repeat same steps on top left corner of panel. Weave in ends.
